LUNA MAO CHING

I wasn’t sure I’d heard Remy right. Had he just told me he was my brother, Nam-gi? Had he also said he was about to tell me about Ajax Clean?

“Um, what did you just say?” I asked. My entire body had numbed. My ears rung as the blood rushed to my head with every thunderous pump of my heart.

The man who was supposed to be my brother fidgeted where he stood. His head turned from side to side, keeping his eyes fixed in as many places as possible as if expecting to be ambushed any second. “Look, can we discuss this inside? I’m not sure how safe it is out here. I promise, I’ll try to explain everything as soon as I can.”

I backed away from the door, and gestured for him to enter. The moment he was inside, he stuck his head out the door once more for another peak, then slid the door closed, and shut the blinds before turning to look at me with a nervous grin.

“Sorry to spring that on you so suddenly,” he said. “It’s just that we really don’t have a lot of time. You need to pack some things, and we need to go.”

I pointed to the couch. “Sit.”

“But I’m serious. We need to…”

“Not until I know what’s going on. Things have been insane the last few days. First the birthday flowers with the strange, threatening note…then the double homicide and the…”

“Wait,” he said. “Hold up. What note?”

“If you’d check your email every once in a while, you’d already know.” I nodded to the couch. “Now sit. It’s three-thirty in morning. Nothing’s going to happen here. We’re safe.”

I suddenly remembered the gun still in my hand. Embarrassed, I tucked in back in the waistband of my pajamas and sat down on one side of the couch. I then pointed to the other side and glared at him.

With his usual boyish charm, Remy rolled his eyes and did as he was told.

“Now,” I said. “Tell me everything. I need to know before I can trust you.” I sense he was about to protest when he opened his mouth, and I shook my head. “I’m not going anywhere with you until I have some answers. That is a fact. So, the longer you take, the longer we will remain here.”

“Fine. You already know about dad sending me here to America. When things got weird—when he was forced to go on the run—he knew he couldn’t take both of his children with him. He sent me to a man he’d met during the Korean War. An American soldier named Jerome Jax.”

“I remember father telling stories about the man. How he’d saved the American’s life.”

He nodded. “Yes. Jerome owed dad big time. So I went to live with him and his wife, Bernice. Now, Jerome was a hard man. Brutal even. But he was honorable. He took me in, but we never really saw eye to eye. In his mind, his job was merely to put a roof over my head and feed me until I was old enough to go out on my own.
